Comfort notes
Avoid trying to solve everything. Remind them of what is true, mention a time they handled something similar, and say what you would do if you were beside them.
- Open when today was heavier than expected
- Open when you cannot sleep
- Open when you are doubting yourself
- Open when you miss home
- Open when you need permission to stop for the day
Playful notes
A photo, short audio clip, or familiar quote often works better here than a long letter.
- Open when you need a terrible joke
- Open when we are pretending not to argue about dinner
- Open when you have stolen my hoodie again
- Open when you want evidence that you were right once
Date-locked notes
Use a real scheduled unlock only when waiting is part of the meaning. Otherwise let them open the note whenever they need it.
- The morning of their birthday
- The day of an exam, interview, or flight
- Your next anniversary
- The date you expect to close the distance
A simple writing formula
Start with ‘If you opened this, I think you might be feeling…’ Add one memory that matches, one thing you want them to remember, and one small next action such as playing the attached voice note or looking at a photograph.
